Perhaps the saddest thing I’ve read in a while, the story of the Last Tree of Ténéré is heartbreaking; the poor thing, all alone, the last survivor of a great and mighty forest brought low by desertification, and its fate? To be run over by a drunk driver. That’s really really sad to read, and the only thing sadder is the strange and creepy metal statue that’s been erected in its place, as some kind of “memorial.” I mean seriously; couldn’t we think of anything a smidge less harsh and manmade to serve as the memorial? The entire story is just a nightmare.
Speaking of nightmares, I think the webcomic, Shooting War, is incredible, timely, and also incredibly sad. Sad namely because I can completely see this world being the real one in a few short years, just as predicted.
On to brighter things, then.
In such bigger and brighter news, in fact, out of this world news, it looks like several items of Star Trek memorabilia are going up for auction in the near future. Sad though; some of those things I’d absolutely LOVE to have; I wouldn’t mind the runabout, or more importantly the Resikkan Flute that was from one of my favorite episodes of Next Generation. I know, I know, I’m such a geek.
In other news, old TechTV star Chris Pirillo has branched out from technology to wieght loss tips. Bod mod, anyone? The tips are pretty good though; and I’m certainly in the market for a bod mod.
Did the estimated values of the ST memorabilia seem low to you? Maybe it’s a mark of a true ST geek to think that — but I have a feeling they will make much more on those items!
re: tree monument Perhaps the secret of its ugliness is that they melted the truck driver and his vehicle and made a sculpture from the mix. In which case: it’s quite attractive.
Definitely low. 🙂 I noticed that as well; I suppose that some of them were relatively recent and from series like TNG and Voyager that’s what kept the prices low. But still!
As for the monument; I can only hope. 🙂
